About Farol-Museu de Santa Marta
The Farol de Santa Marta was built in 1868 atop the former Forte de Santa Marta, from the 17th century, to guide ships entering the Tejo. The tower has blue and white stripes and is still in operation.
Since 2007, the fort and the lighthouse have operated as a museum, with lighthouse equipment, lenses and lamps, and the history of coastal signaling in Portugal. The tower can be climbed, with views over the cove and the bay.
On the other side of the small Santa Marta cove is the Torre de São Sebastião, an early-20th-century small palace that houses the Museu Condes de Castro Guimarães, with furniture, tiles, paintings and a library with a 16th-century illuminated manuscript.
Around the museum is the Parque Marechal Carmona, a garden with a lake, large trees and free-roaming animals such as ducks and peacocks.
