About Estoril e o Casino

Estoril is about 3 km east of Cascais and developed in the early 20th century as a luxury resort. During World War II, with Portugal neutral, it received refugees, spies and exiled royal families.

Casino Estoril, opposite the gardens that slope down to the sea, is one of the largest in Europe. British writer Ian Fleming, who stayed in Estoril during the war, used the casino atmosphere as inspiration for Casino Royale, the first James Bond book.

Praia do Tamariz, next to the train station, has calm water and an ocean pool. From there the seafront promenade departs, a walkway by the sea that goes to Cascais.

The promenade, known as the paredão, is used by people walking, running and sunbathing, and passes by beaches and small bars.
