About Casa das Histórias Paula Rego
The Casa das Histórias Paula Rego is dedicated to one of the most well-known Portuguese artists of the 20th century. Paula Rego was born in Lisbon in 1935, spent her childhood near Cascais and lived most of her life in London, where she died in 2022.
The museum opened in 2009, in a building by architect Eduardo Souto de Moura, winner of the Pritzker Prize in 2011. The two pyramid-shaped towers, of concrete painted red, stand out among the garden's trees.
The collection brings together the artist's paintings, drawings and prints, known for scenes that recreate folk tales, children's stories and women's lives, with strong characters and unsettling settings. There are also works by her husband, the painter Victor Willing.
The museum hosts temporary exhibitions and has a café and shop. It is a few minutes from the Cidadela and the Farol de Santa Marta.
