About Ponte Internacional Valença–Tui
The International Bridge links Valença to Tui across the Minho river and is the best-known crossing between northern Portugal and Galicia. Opened in 1886, it is a two-level metal bridge: the railway runs on the lower deck, and the road on the upper deck, with pedestrian walkways on both sides.
The bridge is often attributed to Gustave Eiffel, but the design is by the Spanish engineer Pelayo Mancebo. The lattice iron structure stands out in the landscape, between Valença’s fortress and Tui’s cathedral, each perched on its bank.
Crossing the bridge on foot is part of the Caminho Português de Santiago, and many pilgrims mark their entry into Spain there. The middle of the bridge marks the border, and on the other side the clock is one hour ahead.
The best views of the whole bridge are from Valença’s ramparts and from the riverside promenade in Tui. The Celta train, between Porto and Vigo, crosses the bridge on the lower deck.
