Approximate road distances. Check flights and bus schedules before you travel.
Check before booking. From the capital, the train on the line to Liège reaches Clervaux in about 1 hour; the station is a 10-minute walk from the castle. By car it’s about 60 km via the northern motorway and the national road. Public transport is free except for first class on the train; check beforehand.
How many days
One day is enough for The Family of Man, the museum of the Batalha das Ardenas in the castle, and the abbey. Those who like walking can stay overnight in town and do a section of the Escapardenne route, which passes through Clervaux.
When to go
From May to September, with long days and the trails open. October usually brings autumn colours in the valley. The exhibition The Family of Man is usually closed two days a week and may have winter closures; check before you go.
The seasons shown are the most usual ones; nature doesn't always follow the calendar.
Do you need a car?
No: the train from the capital stops in town, and the castle, the abbey and the centre are all walkable. The abbey is on the slope, about a 15-minute climb. A car helps if you want to continue to Vianden or the Haute-Sûre lake the same day.
