About Collegio del Cambio
The Collegio del Cambio was the seat of the corporation of money changers, the bankers of medieval Perúgia. In the mid-15th century the corporation gained the right to install itself in the Palazzo dei Priori, and at the end of that century decided to decorate its audience hall.
The painting was assigned to Pietro Vannucci, the Perugino, then one of the most sought-after painters in Italy. Between 1496 and 1500 he covered the walls and the vault of the Sala delle Udienze with figures of virtues, sages and heroes of Antiquity, prophets, sibyls and scenes from the Gospels, joining the classical and Christian worlds.
Among the paintings, Perugino left his own framed portrait. The benches and the carved wooden table are by Domenico del Tasso. Many scholars believe that the young Rafael, the master's pupil, worked on part of the figures.
Next to the hall is the chapel of São João Batista, patron of the corporation, painted by Giannicola di Paolo, another disciple of Perugino.
