About Torre del Moro
The Torre del Moro was built around 1200, next to the Palazzo dei Sette, which belonged to the Della Terza family and later to the popes. It stands at the junction of Corso Cavour with Via del Duomo and Via della Costituente, the point where the town's four historic quarters meet.
At 47 meters it is the tallest structure in the center and was used to watch over the town and the castles of the Orvieto territory. In the 19th century it received the large clock, and at the top there is a medieval bell decorated with the symbols of the city's trade guilds.
The first section is by elevator, and the second by 236 steps. From the upper terrace you can see the entire tuff rock on which Orvieto was built, the central rooftops, the Duomo façade and flank, and the Paglia River valley with the station down below.
The name probably comes from Raffaele di Sante, nicknamed il Moro, who also gave his name to the neighborhood and the palace next door. The Palazzo dei Sette, in turn, owes its name to the seven magistrates who represented the guilds in the Middle Ages.
