About Puccini Museum - Casa natale
Giacomo Puccini was born in Lucca on 22 December 1858, into a family of musicians that for more than a century had dominated the city's musical life. The birthplace is in the Corte San Lorenzo, a small courtyard in the centre to which the family had moved in 1815.
The apartment has been turned into a museum and recreates the rooms from the time when the young Puccini lived there, with family furniture and paintings and wall decorations recovered during the restoration. The highlight is the Steinway piano on which the composer worked on Turandot, his last opera.
Display cases show letters, scores, documents and photographs, as well as costumes from operas such as Tosca and Turandot. The route helps explain Puccini's connection with Lucca and the surrounding area where he lived, especially in Torre del Lago near Viareggio.
In the Piazza Cittadella, opposite the entrance to the courtyard, a bronze statue shows the composer seated in an armchair. In Lucca, churches and halls often host concerts featuring Puccini arias throughout the year.
