About Museo Archeologico Regionale Antonino Salinas
The Museo Archeologico Regionale Antonino Salinas occupies the former convent of the Filippini fathers of the Olivella, in central Palermo, and is named after the archaeologist who directed it in the 19th century. It is one of the richest archaeological collections in Italy, with pieces from all over Sicily.
The highlight is the metopes from the temples of Selinunte, a Greek city in the southwest of the island: stone reliefs from the 6th and 5th centuries BC with mythological scenes, such as Perseus cutting off Medusa's head. There is also the Palermo Stone, an Egyptian fragment with a list of pharaohs, lion heads that served as spouts in the temple of Himera, bronzes, ceramics and Phoenician and Punic inscriptions.
The building has two cloisters with fountains and plants. The visit helps to understand the Greek and Punic past of the island before heading to Agrigento or Selinunte.
