About Catacombe dei Cappuccini
The Catacombe dei Cappuccini lie beneath the convent of the Capuchin friars, in the Cappuccini district west of the centre. At the end of the 16th century the friars began preserving the bodies of the religious by a drying process, and the practice later extended to nobles, professionals and local families until the early 20th century.
The bodies, about eight thousand, are in corridors divided by category: friars, priests, men, women, virgins, children and professionals. Many wear period clothing and are placed in wall niches or coffins. The visit is a portrait of Palermo's relationship with death and with the memory of ancestors.
The best-known figure is Rosalia Lombardo, a girl who died in 1920 and was embalmed with a technique that preserved her face impressively. It is a place of silence and respect that may be upsetting for sensitive people and children.
