About La Pescheria
La Pescheria, or the Piscarìa in Sicilian, has been Catania's fish market since at least the early 19th century. It lies behind the Fontana dell'Amenano, in an area lower than the square, next to the old walls of Carlo V and facing the Archi della Marina, the railway arches.
The stalls display swordfish, tuna, sardines, sea urchins, octopus and shellfish, often still moving. Vendors shout out their wares in Sicilian, and part of the charm of the visit is that noise.
In the surrounding streets, the market continues with fruits, vegetables, cheeses, olives and cured meats. Small restaurants and trattorias in the area serve fish bought there, and there are street food stalls.
The market operates in the morning, Monday to Saturday, and starts to pack up around lunchtime. The ground often gets wet.
