Porto di Capri – Marina Grande 3 km
Approximate road distances. Check flights and bus schedules before you travel.
Capri is an island: it has no airport or train station, and it’s reached by boat at the port of Marina Grande. From Nápoles, aliscafos (fast boats) depart from Molo Beverello in about 50 minutes, and the traghetto (ferry) leaves from Calata Porta di Massa in around 1h20. From Sorrento it’s about 25 minutes. Boats from Positano and Amalfi typically operate from April to October.
How many days
One day is enough for the Piazzetta, the Giardini di Augusto, Anacapri and the Grotta Azzurra or the boat circuit, leaving early from Nápoles or Sorrento. Spending a night on the island allows you to see the Villa Jovis and Monte Solaro at a relaxed pace and enjoy Capri after the day-trippers have left.
When to go
The season runs from April to October, with more boats, tours and places open. July and August are the busiest months. May, June and September usually have calm seas and fewer people. In winter many hotels and restaurants close, there are fewer boats and the Grotta Azzurra often closes because of the sea.
The seasons shown are the most usual ones; nature doesn't always follow the calendar.
Do you need a car?
No. Visitor cars do not circulate in Capri for most of the year. The island has a funicular between Marina Grande and the Piazzetta, small buses between Capri, Anacapri and the marinas, and convertible taxis. Many places can only be reached on foot.

One day in Capri
-
Morning
Arrival and Grotta Azzurra
Take one of the first boats from Naples or Sorrento. In Marina Grande, if the sea is calm, do the boat trip with a stop at the Grotta Azzurra early, before the queue grows.
-
Afternoon
Anacapri and Monte Solaro
Take the bus up to Anacapri. Visit Villa San Michele, by Axel Munthe, and take the chairlift to the top of Monte Solaro to see the whole island.
-
Late afternoon
Giardini di Augusto
Return by bus to Capri and walk to the Giardini di Augusto to see the Faraglioni and the curves of Via Krupp from above. If you have time left, continue to the Punta Tragara viewpoint.
-
Evening
Piazzetta
Finish at the Piazzetta, with the clock tower and the church of Santo Stefano. Those returning the same day should confirm the time of the last boat; those staying overnight will dine with the square quieter.
Check before you go. Opening hours and days change, and places may close for renovations, holidays or events. This itinerary is a suggestion from Cidade Turismo, not a commitment: plan yours by checking directly with each place you intend to visit.

Frequently asked questions
Can you visit Capri on a day trip from Naples?
Yes. The aliscafo takes about 50 minutes and there are departures from early in the morning. Take a morning boat and confirm the time of the last return, which is usually in the late afternoon.
Does Capri have an airport?
No. The island has no airport or train station; arrival is always by boat from Naples, Sorrento or, in season, from the Amalfi Coast. The nearest airport is Naples (NAP).
How to get around the island?
By funicular between Marina Grande and the Piazzetta, by bus between Capri, Anacapri and the marinas, by taxi or on foot. A visitor car is not the way to go.
Is the Grotta Azzurra always open?
No. It depends on the sea: with waves, wind or high tide, it closes. From April to October it usually opens more regularly. Check at the port before buying the tour.
Is it worth staying overnight in Capri?
For those who can, yes: at night and early in the morning the island is quieter, and there is time for Villa Jovis and Monte Solaro. In season, book accommodation in advance.
