Approximate road distances. Check flights and bus schedules before you travel.
Confirm before purchasing. You reach it via Milan: from Milano Centrale, trains to Como San Giovanni in about 40 minutes to 1 hour; from Milano Cadorna, trains to Como Nord Lago in about 1 hour. From Malpensa, the simplest route is via Milan or by car or bus.
How many days
One day is enough for the Duomo, the promenade to Villa Olmo, the Tempio Voltiano and the ride up to Brunate. With two days you can sleep in town and use Como as a base for boats to Bellagio and the villages on the west shore.
When to go
From April to June and from September to October, with mild weather and frequent boats. July and August are hot and crowded. In winter, from December to February, the town is quiet and boats run with fewer departures.
The seasons shown are the most usual ones; nature doesn't always follow the calendar.
Do you need a car?
No. Como's center is explored on foot, the funicular goes up to Brunate and Navigazione Laghi boats leave from Piazza Cavour for the lake towns. The historic center has a ZTL (limited traffic zone), and the lakeside road is narrow and busy in summer.

Frequently asked questions
Which train station should I use to go from Milan to Como?
Como San Giovanni receives trains departing from Milano Centrale and is a 10-minute walk from the center. Como Nord Lago, served by trains from Milano Cadorna, is even closer to the lake and the pier. Validate the regional paper ticket before boarding.
Can you visit Como on a day trip from Milan?
Yes. The journey takes less than an hour and one day is enough for the center, the Brunate funicular and the promenade to Villa Olmo.

From the Navigazione Laghi pier at Piazza Cavour. There are slow boats that stop at several towns and aliscafi (hydrofoils) that are faster. The season with the most departures is usually from April to October.

Yes — it's worth it for those who want to explore the lake without hurry. Como has a direct train to Milan and boats to the other towns, which makes it a practical base.
Is there a tourist tax in Como?
Yes. It is charged per person per night and paid at the accommodation.
