About Museo Arcivescovile e Cappella di Sant'Andrea
The Museo Arcivescovile is located in the archbishop's palace, next to the cathedral of Ravena. Its main feature is the Cappella di Sant'Andrea, built around the year 500 as the private oratory of the Catholic bishops, at a time when the city was ruled by the Arian Teodorico.
In the chapel's vestibule, a mosaic shows Christ as a Roman warrior, wearing armor, holding the cross and an open book and trampling a lion and a serpent. In the chapel, the vault has four angels supporting Christ's monogram on a golden background, and the arches display portraits of apostles and saints in medallions.
The museum houses the Cátedra de Maximiano, a wooden throne covered with carved ivory panels, made in the 6th century for Archbishop Massimiano, the same who consecrated San Vitale. The panels depict John the Baptist, the evangelists and scenes from the life of Joseph of Egypt.
The other rooms contain tombstones, sculptures and fragments of mosaics from churches that no longer exist in the city, as well as textiles and liturgical objects.
