About Battistero Neoniano

The Battistero Neoniano is the oldest of Ravenna's monuments still intact. It was begun by Bishop Orso, who built the first cathedral, and finished and decorated by Bishop Neon in the mid-5th century, from whom it takes its name. It is also called Battistero degli Ortodossi, in contrast to the Arians' baptistery.

The plan is octagonal. The ground level has risen over the centuries, and for this reason the building appears sunken in relation to the street. On the outside it is plain brick; inside, the dome and walls are covered with mosaics, stucco and marbles.

In the central medallion of the dome, John the Baptist baptizes Christ in the Jordan River, which is personified as an old man. Around him, the twelve apostles walk in two groups, carrying crowns, on a blue background. Lower down, empty thrones and altars complete the decoration, and between the windows there are figures of prophets in stucco.

In the centre is the octagonal marble baptismal font. The baptistery is still used for baptisms on certain dates.
