About Basilica di Sant'Apollinare in Classe
Classe was Ravena's Roman military port, where the Adriatic fleet was based. The basilica was commissioned by Bishop Ursicino shortly after Teodorico's death, funded by the banker Giuliano Argentario, and consecrated in 549 by Archbishop Massimiano. It was built over the burial area of Santo Apolinario, the first bishop of Ravena.
The brick building has three naves separated by 24 fluted marble columns coming from Proconeso, near Constantinople. Beside it stands a 10th-century cylindrical bell tower, with windows that increase in number on each level.
The apse mosaic is the major highlight. At the top, a cross bearing Christ's face appears in a blue disc with stars, between Moses and Elijah. Below, Santo Apolinario, arms outstretched, stands in a green field with trees, flowers and twelve sheep, representing the faithful. On the nave walls there are portraits of Ravena's archbishops painted in the 18th century.
The church stands isolated in a field, far from the center, and is administered by the state. Nearby is the Classis Ravenna, a museum about the city and its ancient port.
