About Basilica di San Vitale
Construction of San Vitale began in 532, when Ravenna was still governed by the Goths, under Bishop Ecclesio and financed by the banker Giuliano Argentario. The church was consecrated in 547 by Archbishop Massimiano, after the city had been taken by the Byzantine emperor Justinian.
The plan is octagonal, with a central dome and an ambulatory in two levels. From the outside the brick building is simple. Inside, the presbytery and apse are covered with mosaics in green, blue and gold.
On the apse walls two panels face each other. On one side, Justinian carries a golden paten, surrounded by soldiers, clerics and Archbishop Massimiano, the only one with his name written. On the other, Theodora holds a chalice, surrounded by ladies of the court. Above, the young Christ, seated on the globe, hands the crown of martyrdom to Saint Vitalis.
In the lateral lunettes there are scenes from the Old Testament, such as Abraham's hospitality and the sacrifice of Isaac, and on the vault of the presbytery the Lamb of God is supported by four angels. The floor preserves original mosaic sections and a marble labyrinth.
