About Museo Faggiano

In 2001, Luciano Faggiano bought a property on Via Ascanio Grandi to open a restaurant. While breaking the floor to replace a sewage pipe he discovered a hole and, beneath it, centuries of history. The excavations, carried out under the supervision of heritage authorities, took years, and the restaurant became a museum.

In the basement there are Messapian tombs —the people who lived in the Salento before the Romans— as well as Roman silos and cisterns and medieval passageways. The objects found, such as pottery and coins, are displayed in showcases along the route.

On the upper floors, the house preserves traces of different uses over the centuries, such as a chapel and a convent, and symbols attributed to the Templars. The visit ends on the terrace, with views over the roofs and bell towers of the center.

The visit shows, within a single building, how Lecce was built in layers, one atop another.
