Approximate road distances. Check flights and bus schedules before you travel.
Check before booking. Ireland West Airport (NOC), at Knock, is about 55 km away. The train from Dublin Heuston reaches Westport in about 3h30, with a change on some services; the station is a 10-minute walk from the centre. Buses link Westport with Galway, Sligo and Achill.
How many days
Two days: one for the town and Croagh Patrick, including the Memorial da Fome, and another for the Greenway or Achill. With three days, do both unhurriedly.
When to go
From May to September the days are long and the Greenway is more pleasant. On the last Sunday of July the pilgrimage to Croagh Patrick fills the town. April and October are usually quieter. In winter the wind is strong and it gets dark early.
The seasons shown are the most usual ones; nature doesn't always follow the calendar.
Do you need a car?
For the town, no. For Croagh Patrick there are taxis and buses to Murrisk, and the Greenway is done by bike, with rental and return transport. For Achill, a car helps. In Ireland you drive on the left.
