How to get there

Approximate road distances. Check flights and bus schedules before you travel.

Check before buying. The most used international airport is Athens, about 220 km away; from there you can take a KTEL bus or drive via the Olympia Odos motorway, in about 2h30 to 3 hours. Araxos airport, around 40 km away, has seasonal flights. Ferries from Italy—Bari, Brindisi, Ancona and Veneza—arrive at the new port, south of the center. From northern Greece you reach Patras by the Ionian road and via the Rio–Antirrio bridge.

How many days

One day is enough for the church of Santo André, Georgiou I Square, the Roman odeon and the castle. With two days you can add the archaeological museum, the Achaia Clauss winery and the Rio–Antirrio bridge, with Rio Castle. Patras is also a good base for Olímpia, about 2 hours away.

When to go

From April to June and from September to October the weather is mild, good for climbing to the castle and walking. July and August are hot. The carnival takes place in the weeks before the Orthodox Lent, usually between February and March, and the city fills up.

The seasons shown are the most usual ones; nature doesn't always follow the calendar.

Do you need a car?

For the city centre, no: the lower town, the stairways, the castle and the church of Santo André are all within walking distance, and city buses cover the rest. A car helps for the Achaia Clauss winery, the Rio–Antirrio bridge and Olímpia, but the bridge and Rio Castle can also be reached by suburban train or bus.
