-
Estação KTEL Lakonias de Esparta Sparti · 95 km
Approximate road distances. Check flights and bus schedules before you travel.
Confirm before booking. From Atenas it is about 300 km and 4½ hours by car, via the A7 to Trípoli and Esparta and then along the Molaoi road to Gefyra, the village on the mainland. KTEL Lakonias buses link Atenas and Esparta to Monemvasia, with few departures per day and usually a change in Esparta. From Náuplia it is about 3 hours by car. There is no airport or regular ferry.
How many days
One night and a day: arrive late afternoon, walk around the Kastro at night, climb to the upper town early in the morning and swim at the sea gate. Two days allow you to include Mystras, 1½ hours away, or the beaches on the north coast, like Pori and Plytra.
When to go
From May to June and from September to October the sea is good for swimming and the climb to the upper town is comfortably warm. July and August are hot and crowded, especially on weekends. In winter, from November to March, many guesthouses and tavernas close and the wind can be strong; the town becomes quiet and pretty, but check what’s open.
The seasons shown are the most usual ones; nature doesn't always follow the calendar.
Do you need a car?
To get there: either by car, or patience with the KTEL buses via Esparta. In the town there are no cars: the Kastro is pedestrian-only, and the car stays in Gefyra or by the bridge. In summer a minibus runs the bridge crossing. For Mystras, Esparta and the region’s beaches, a car is essential.
