About Aquário de Creta (Cretaquarium)
The Cretaquarium, also called Thalassocosmos, is in Gournes on the coast east of Heracliion, on the grounds of a former US military base that became a marine research center. It is one of the largest aquariums in the Mediterranean and displays only species from this sea: sharks, rays, groupers, morays, octopuses, seahorses and jellyfish, in dozens of tanks ranging from small glass cases to large panoramic windows.
The tanks reproduce the habitats of the Cretan seafloor, from rocky caves to seagrass meadows and sandy areas, with texts in Greek and English and an audio guide available in several languages. There are animal feeding demonstrations at set times and a programme for children.
For those spending the day on the east coast beaches, in Gournes or Hersonissos, it’s a good stop for the hottest part of the day. Next door, the private Museu dos Dinossauros de Creta is an extra option for families.
