About Praia de Elafonisi
Elafonisi is Crete's most famous beach and lies at the island's southwestern tip, where the Aegean meets the Libyan Sea. A shallow, warm lagoon separates the coast from the islet of Elafonisi; most of the time you can wade across with the water at knee height. The sand in some stretches has pinkish tones: the color comes from fragments of microorganisms and shells mixed with the light grains, most visible at the waterline and after days of rough seas.
The islet is a protected natural area, with dunes, low‑growing cedars and sea daffodils, and it is forbidden to take sand or step on the dunes. The beaches on the mainland side have umbrellas and sunbeds for hire, showers and simple bars; on the islet side, after crossing the lagoon, the coves are quieter and have no facilities.
In high summer the beach fills from about 11:00 with day‑trip buses and cars from across the island. The west wind usually blows in the afternoon. Outside July and August, Elafonisi is a peaceful place, with shallow water good for children.

Cidade Turismo reviews its information regularly, but something may have changed. Check with the place before planning your trip.
How much time to set aside
A full day, including travel time. At least half a day on the beach.
Best time
From May to October for swimming; June and September offer strong heat without the crowds of July and August. Arrive before 10:00 to park nearby and see the beach empty. The wind usually picks up in the afternoon.
How to get there
It's about 75 km from Chania, a one‑and‑a‑half to two‑hour drive on winding mountain roads, via Elos or the Topolia gorge. In summer there are KTEL buses from Chania with limited schedules and day‑trip excursions; check the seasonal timetable.
Tip
Bring water and a snack, because the facilities are basic, and water shoes because of the rocks in the lagoon. Do not take pink sand: it is forbidden and fined. On the way back, the road via Elos passes by chestnut trees and village taverns.
