About Mosteiro de Gouverneto

Gouverneto is one of Crete's oldest monasteries still in operation, completed in 1537 according to the most accepted date. It sits on the high point of the Akrotiri peninsula, on a rocky, wind‑exposed plateau, and is shaped like a fortress: a square courtyard surrounded by cells, with the church in the middle and towers at the corners. The church façade bears Venetian reliefs with figures of monsters, uncommon in Orthodox churches.

What draws many visitors is the trail that starts behind the monastery. In about a 15‑minute descent you reach the Arkoudiotissa cave, with a stalagmite shaped like a bear that was once venerated as the goddess Artemis and today houses a small chapel. Another 20–30 minutes descending through the gorge brings you to the ruins of the 11th‑century Katholiko monastery, built inside and around a cave where St John the Hermit lived. A stone bridge crosses the gorge, and a little further down the path ends at a rocky cove where you can swim.

The return is all uphill, in the sun, and takes longer than the descent. The monastery is closed some days of the week and has restricted visiting hours; the trail, however, begins outside the walls.
