About Necromanteion of Acheron

The Necromanteion was, for the ancient Greeks, the oracle of the dead: a sanctuary on the banks of the Aqueronte where the living consulted the souls. Homer mentions it in the Odyssey, when Odysseus descends to the world of the dead, and Herodotus also refers to it.

In 1958, archaeologist Sotirios Dakaris excavated a set of ruins on the top of a hill near the village of Mesopotamos, where the Aqueronte plain meets the sea, and identified it as that oracle based on the location and the resemblance to ancient descriptions. Excavations continued in the 1960s and 1970s and revealed a large stone-walled building with corridors, rooms and an underground chamber with arches.

The interpretation is debated today. The finds, which include agricultural tools, household pottery and parts of catapults, have led many scholars to see the building as a fortified farmhouse from the late 4th century BC, destroyed by the Romans in 167 BC. The visit presents both readings, and the connection with the river of the dead remains what draws visitors.

From the top of the hill you can see the plain and the course of the Aqueronte down to its mouth. Above the ruins stands a small church dedicated to São João Batista.
