About Drepano Beach
Drepano beach is a few kilometres northwest of central Igoumenitsa, on the tip of the gulf. It is a long, narrow stretch of sand that juts into the sea in the shape of a sickle, which gives it its name: drepani means sickle in Greek. On one side is the open sea, on the other a shallow lagoon, and the whole area is a protected natural site, home to water birds.
The water is calm and shallow along much of the beach, which appeals to families. Along the sand there are sections with beach bars, umbrellas and sunbeds in season, and quieter stretches without facilities as you move toward the tip.
From the tip of the beach you can see ferries entering and leaving the port of Igoumenitsa and, on the horizon, the island of Corfu. The sunset takes place over the sea, toward the island.
Next to it is Makrygiali beach, also on the edge of the gulf. The two are the closest beaches to town for those who don’t want to go as far as Syvota.
