About Archaeological Museum of Igoumenitsa

The archaeological museum of Igoumenitsa opened in 2009 in a modern building in the north of town and tells the history of Tesprócia, the Epiro region that stretches from the Ionian Sea to the inland mountains. As the town was destroyed in World War II and rebuilt around the port, the museum is where the region's past is seen.

The collection is divided into five sections: the historical context, the ancient settlements, public life, private life and funerary customs. The pieces come from excavations of the ancient cities of Tesprócia, such as Gitana, near Filiates, Elea and Dymokastro, and from tombs and villages in the region, and range from prehistory to the Byzantine period.

There are ceramics, coins, jewelry, weapons, tools and household objects, as well as inscriptions and clay seals that help explain how city administration worked. The panels have text in Greek and in English.

The museum is small and the visit is quick, which makes it a good stop for those waiting for the ferry or spending an afternoon in town.
