About Château de Langeais

The Château de Langeais is located in the center of the small town of Langeais, between Tours and Saumur. It was built by Louis XI from 1465, on the site of a 10th-century fortress constructed by the Count of Anjou Foulques Nerra. The remains of that stone tower are still in the park.

The most notable event in the castle's history is the marriage of Charles VIII to Anne of Brittany on December 6, 1491. The union brought Brittany into the French crown. One of the rooms recreates the scene with wax figures.

The interior has about fifteen furnished rooms with pieces from the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, tapestries and carved chests. The façade facing the town retains the appearance of a fortress, with a drawbridge and a wall walk.

The castle belongs to the Institut de France and is open year-round. The park, roughly 11 hectares, contains cedars and sequoias.
