About Abbaye du Mont-Saint-Michel

The Abbey of Mont-Saint-Michel occupies the top of the granite islet, about 80 meters above the sand. It was founded as a Benedictine monastery in 966 and still has a religious community: since 2001 a community of the Fraternities of Jerusalem has lived there.

The complex was built in layers over centuries, with the abbey church at the top, supported by crypts set into the rock. On the north side stands the Merveille, a 13th‑century Gothic building with three floors, housing the monks' refectory and the cloister that appears suspended over the bay. The gilded statue of Saint Michael atop the spire reaches 157 meters above the beach.

After the French Revolution, the abbey was used as a prison and ceased to be one in 1863. It has been a listed historic monument since 1862 and, together with the bay, was added to the UNESCO World Heritage list in 1979.

The visit follows a one‑way route with many stairs, passing the Terrasse de l'Ouest, the esplanade in front of the church, which offers views over the bay.

Practical information

Cidade Turismo reviews its information regularly, but something may have changed. Check with the place before planning your trip.

How much time to set aside

About 1.5 to 2 hours for the abbey; a full day for the Mont.

Best time

Right at opening or late in the afternoon, when there are fewer people; in the European summer and on weekends the queues are long. Book tickets in advance. Confirm opening times, which change with the season.

How to get there

From the car park or the bus stop at La Caserne, take the navette (the shuttle, called Le Passeur) or walk along the causeway, about 45 minutes. On the Mont, climb the Grande Rue up to the abbey entrance.

Tip

Be prepared for many steps and bring a jacket: it’s very windy at the top. Young Europeans have their own entry rules; other visitors are required to pay an entrance fee.
