About Musée Eugène-Boudin

The Musée Eugène-Boudin was created in 1868 by the Honfleur town council, at the initiative of painters Louis-Alexandre Dubourg and Eugène Boudin, both natives of the town. Since 1924 it has occupied the chapel of the former Augustinian convent, expanded in 1974 with a new building.

Boudin, born in Honfleur in 1824, is considered one of the precursors of Impressionism: he painted outdoors the beaches, skies and ports of the Normandy coast, and he was the one who encouraged the young Claude Monet to paint outside the studio.

The collection brings together works by Boudin and artists connected to Normandy and the estuary, such as Monet, Jongkind, Courbet and Dufy, as well as a collection of regional objects and costumes. The museum also hosts temporary exhibitions.

It is a short visit and good to understand why Honfleur and the neighboring Côte Fleurie attracted so many painters in the 19th century.
