About Cathédrale Saint-Jean-Baptiste
The Cathédrale Saint-Jean-Baptiste, known simply as Saint-Jean, is the seat of the archbishopric of Lyon. It holds the title of primatiale: the archbishop of Lyon bears the historical title of Primate of the Gauls. It stands at the southern tip of Vieux Lyon, facing the Saona.
Construction began in the 12th century and lasted about three centuries. For that reason the choir is Romanesque while the nave and the façade are Gothic. The façade has three portals with hundreds of small carved medallions, and the rose windows and colorful stained glass are among the interior highlights.
Inside, near the transept, there is a medieval astronomical clock with figures that move at certain times of the day. Next to the cathedral, the former Manécanterie, where the choir boys lived, is one of the oldest buildings in the city.
The square in front, the Place Saint-Jean, has a fountain and is the neighborhood's meeting point, beside the metro station and the funiculars.
