About Rocher Corneille et Notre-Dame de France

The Rocher Corneille is the basalt rock rising behind Le Puy's cathedral. It is the remnant of an old volcano's chimney and reaches about 750 metres in altitude, around 130 metres above the town.

On the top stands the statue of Notre-Dame de France, the Virgin and Child, built in the 19th century from the metal of cannons captured during the siege of Sebastopol, following a design by sculptor Jean-Marie Bonnassieux. The statue is painted red and can be seen from almost the entire town.

A path with steps climbs from the cathedral quarter to the summit. From up there, the view shows the red roofs of the old centre, the cathedral just below, the chapel of Saint-Michel d'Aiguilhe on its needle, and the mountains of the Velay.

It is possible to climb inside the statue via a narrow staircase up near the head, with small windows overlooking the town.
