About Centre historique du Puy

Le Puy's historic centre climbs by slopes and steps from the lower part of town up to the cathedral. The streets are cobbled and lined with old houses, many of dark volcanic stone, with doors and windows from various centuries.

The place du Plot, in the lower part, hosts the Saturday morning market with regional products such as Le Puy green lentils, cheeses and meats. From there, the rue Raphaël and the rue des Tables climb up to the cathedral's staircase—the route pilgrims take in reverse when setting off for Santiago.

Le Puy is the town of bobbin lace, the dentelle du Puy, mentioned since 1408 and listed in France's inventory of intangible cultural heritage. In the streets near the cathedral there are shops and workshops where lacemakers work with bobbins and pins, and it's common to see them at work.

The streets also hold chapels, fountains and remnants of the old walls. The best way to discover it is to climb slowly to the cathedral and descend by a different route.
