About Trésor de Conques
The Treasure of Conques brings together the abbey's collection of religious goldsmithing, considered the most complete in France, with pieces from the 9th to the 16th century. It is displayed in the former monks' refectory next to the church.
The best-known piece is the statue-reliquary of Sainte Foy, a seated figure covered with gold, precious stones, cameos and crystals, which houses the saint's relics. Formed from an older head and enriched over the centuries, it is one of the rarest works of medieval European art.
The treasury also includes reliquaries, processional crosses, portable altars and enamel pieces, many of them offered by pilgrims and lords throughout the Middle Ages. The pieces survived wars and the Revolution because the villagers hid them.
The visit is short and complements that of the abbey: after seeing the tympanum and the church, the treasury shows what drew pilgrims to Conques.
