About Pont-Vieux

The Pont-Vieux, the old bridge, crosses the Aude river between the Bastide Saint-Louis and the Trivalle neighborhood at the foot of the Cité. The stone bridge was built in the early 14th century when the king authorized residents to replace the old wooden crossing.

For centuries it was the only link between the two parts of the town. Today it is reserved for pedestrians and cyclists and serves as the natural route for those walking up from the station to the Cité.

From the middle of the bridge you get one of Carcassonne's most famous views: the Cité's walls and towers high on the hill above the river. At the end of the bridge on the Trivalle side is the façade of the old Manufacture royale, connected to the town's woolen cloth history.
