About Châteaux de Lastours
The Châteaux de Lastours are four ruined castles aligned along a rocky ridge, about 300 meters above sea level, above the Orbiel valley on the edge of the Montagne Noire. The names are Cabaret, Tour Régine, Surdespine and Quertinheux.
In the 12th and 13th centuries, Cabaret was a center of resistance during the crusade against the Cathars. Later the French crown took over the site and reinforced it. The four castles were built and remodeled several times up to the 17th century.
The visit involves a hike along a trail from the village of Lastours, with an ascent to the ruins and views over slopes covered in garrigue, the low vegetation typical of southern France.
Since 2026, the castles of Lastours have been part of the World Heritage property 'Capetian royal fortresses of the Languedoc', together with the castle of Carcassonne.
