About Château de Quéribus

The Château de Quéribus sits on a narrow rocky peak at 728 meters altitude, above the village of Cucugnan, on the border between the Aude and the Pyrénées-Orientales. From there the Corbières, the Fenouillèdes and the Roussillon plain were watched over.

It was one of the last Cathar strongholds and fell in 1255. Afterwards, the French crown incorporated it into the defense of the border with Aragon. When the border was pushed back to the Pyrenees in 1659, the castle lost its function and fell into ruin until restoration began in 1951.

The highlight of the visit is the main tower, which houses a Gothic hall with a single central pillar from which the ribs of the vault spring, lit by a large window.

Quéribus is one of the so-called sons of Carcassonne and, since 2026, part of the site Royal Capetian Fortresses of Languedoc, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
