About Château de Peyrepertuse
The Château de Peyrepertuse sits on a limestone ridge at almost 800 meters altitude, above the village of Duilhac-sous-Peyrepertuse, in the Corbières massif. From the top you can see the vineyards and the garrigue of the Corbières.
The fortress occupies the entire ridge, with an older lower part and the upper Sant Jordi section, enlarged by King Louis IX in the 13th century to defend the border with the Kingdom of Aragon. The view of the castle from Duilhac, with the walls atop the cliff, is one of the region's best-known images.
It receives around 100,000 visitors a year. From the car park below the cliff, you walk up in about 15 minutes along a stone path.
Peyrepertuse is one of the castles known as the sons of Carcassonne and, since 2026, part of the site Royal Capetian Fortresses of Languedoc, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
