About Basilique Saint-Nazaire
The Basilique Saint-Nazaire-et-Saint-Celse was Carcassonne's cathedral until the early 19th century and is located inside the Cité, near the Porte Narbonnaise. It has held the title of basilica since 1898.
Construction spans the 11th to the 14th centuries and shows two styles side by side: the Romanesque nave, darker with thick walls, and the Gothic transept and choir, tall and full of light.
The 13th- and 14th-century stained glass windows, depicting scenes from the life of Christ and the apostles, are among the oldest in southern France. The two rose windows in the transept are the highlight of the visit.
The Romanesque portal seen today was redone in the 19th century during Viollet-le-Duc's restoration.
