About Jardin public de Bordeaux

The Jardin public was designed in 1746 by intendant Tourny as a French-style promenade, at a time when Bordeaux was demolishing its medieval wall and opening up into squares and avenues. In 1856 the city transformed it into an English-style garden, with winding paths, groves and a lake, a layout it retains today.

It covers about 11 hectares in the city centre, with an arboretum of rare trees, a botanical garden, open lawns for picnics, playgrounds, a carousel and the Guignol Guérin puppet theatre. A small electric sightseeing boat circulates on the lake.

Inside the park is the Muséum de Bordeaux, the natural history museum, housed in a former mansion. The garden is listed as a Jardin remarquable and protected as a historic monument.

The park lies between the centre and the Chartrons neighborhood, a few minutes from the CAPC and Place des Quinconces.
