About Musée Bartholdi

Auguste Bartholdi was born in Colmar in 1834 and became known worldwide for the Statue of Liberty in New York. The family house on Rue des Marchands was bequeathed to the city in 1907 and became a museum in 1922.

On three floors, the museum displays models, drawings, paintings and photographs by Bartholdi. One section is dedicated to the Statue of Liberty, with studies and models that show how the work was conceived and built. Another shows the Lion of Belfort, another of the sculptor's famous works, and the monuments he made for Colmar.

In the courtyard is the bronze group "Les Grands Soutiens du Monde", from 1902. Around the city it's worth looking for other works by Bartholdi: the Schwendi fountain near the Koïfhus, the Roesselmann fountain, and the cooper at the top of the Maison des Têtes.

At the entrance to Colmar, on the road coming from the north, there is a 12-meter replica of the Statue of Liberty, inaugurated in 2004 in honor of the sculptor.
