About Museo de Navarra
The Museu de Navarra occupies the former hospital of Nossa Senhora da Misericórdia, from the first half of the 16th century, at the top of the Cuesta de Santo Domingo, at the start of the encierro route. From the original building the façade and the Renaissance chapel were preserved—the only examples of that style in Pamplona. The museum was founded in 1956.
The collection traces the history of Navarra from prehistory to the 20th century. From the Roman period come the mosaics, such as the Triunfo de Baco, from a Roman villa in the region. From the Islamic period the highlight is the cofre de Leyre, an ivory chest carved in Córdoba at the beginning of the 11th century that kept relics at the monastery of Leyre.
There are also Romanesque capitals from the old cathedral, Gothic mural paintings removed from churches in Navarra and reconstructed in the galleries, and paintings from the 16th to the 20th centuries. Among the paintings is the portrait of the marquis of San Adrián by Goya.
The visit is arranged by floors in chronological order, giving an overview of the region's past that you then see reflected in the city's churches and walls.
