About Volcán Villarrica
Volcán Villarrica dominates the landscape of Pucón: the white cone, with a plume of steam rising from the summit, appears above the town's rooftops. It is 2,860 meters high and lies about 16 km to the south, inside Parque Nacional Villarrica, which also protects Quetrupillán and the Chilean side of Lanín.
It is one of the most active volcanoes in South America, with dozens of eruptions recorded since the 16th century. The crater sometimes contains a lava lake, a rare phenomenon worldwide, and roughly 40 km² of ice cover the upper slopes. Sernageomin monitors the volcano and issues color-coded alert levels; when the level rises, access to the crater area is restricted.
The summit ascent is done with registered agencies, which provide a guide, helmet, crampons and an ice axe. The route starts from the base of the ski area on the north slope and continues over snow and volcanic rock. The descent is usually made by sliding seated down the snow trails. Departure is at dawn, and the whole day is physically demanding.
The climb can be canceled due to wind, clouds or alert level, even if you have a reservation. Those who do not want to climb can still see the volcano up close on the park's lower trails, such as those in the Rucapillán sector.

Practical information
Cidade Turismo reviews its information regularly, but something may have changed. Check with the place before planning your trip.
How much time to set aside
The guided ascent takes a full day, with a dawn departure. The park's lower trails take two to four hours.
Best time
The climbing season usually runs from December to March, with less loose snow and long days. In winter, when it operates, the north slope receives skiers. The decision to climb is made the day before or on the day itself, depending on weather and volcanic alert: confirm before you go.
How to get there
The base for the ascent is about 16 km from Pucón via the road to the Rucapillán sector, which climbs the north slope. Agencies provide transport; those going independently to the trails need a car.
Tip
Book the ascent with a registered agency and leave spare days in your schedule in case the trip is postponed. Bring sunscreen, sunglasses, gloves and a snack. Respect access restrictions issued by the authorities.
