About Lago Villarrica
Lago Villarrica, called Mallalafquén in Mapudungun, the Mapuche language, sits in a valley between the cities of Villarrica to the west and Pucón to the east. To the south the volcano rises, reflecting in the water on calm days.
In Pucón the waterfront has two main spots. La Poza is a sheltered cove with a pier from which boat tours and kayak rentals depart. The Playa Grande, next to it, is a long beach of dark volcanic sand that fills with families, beach umbrellas and sailboats in summer.
In summer the water usually ranges between 19 and 22 degrees, milder than the lakes of Los Lagos, and the lake becomes the center of town life, with swimming, waterskiing, sailing and sport fishing. In winter the average drops to about 10 degrees and the beach is deserted.
Pucón began as a fort in 1883, after the occupation of the Araucanía by the Chilean state. The name comes from Mapudungun and is translated as entrance to the mountain range. Mapuche heritage appears in the crafts sold near the lake and in the region's toponymy.

How much time to set aside

Best time
January and February are the months when the beach is crowded and the water is most pleasant. Sunset at Playa Grande, with the volcano lit up, is the most sought-after moment. Outside summer, the waterfront is good for peaceful walks.
How to get there
