About Iglesia de la Santa Cruz
A Iglesia de la Santa Cruz is the parish church of Hanga Roa, on rua Te Pito o te Henua, a few blocks from the cove. The parish was founded in December 1937, and its first priest was Father Sebastián Englert, who gives his name to the island’s museum.
The interior is notable for wooden carvings depicting Catholic saints with features of Rapa Nui art, including bird and fish motifs and Polynesian symbols. Among them is Santa María de Rapa Nui, the first Christian image carved on the island, regarded as the patron and protector of the residents.
From the church, Avenida Policarpo Toro leads to the cove of Hanga Roa Otai, the small fishing boat harbor, where there is a moai at the water’s edge and turtles appear near the pier. South of the bay is Playa Pea, with a natural pool among the rocks. The church is a place of worship: enter quietly and respect services.
