About Anakena

Anakena is one of the two small sand beaches on Easter Island, whose coastline is almost entirely volcanic rock. The sand is light coral and a grove of coconut trees shades the back of the cove. It is the island's most popular beach for swimming.

Oral tradition says Hotu Matu'a landed there with his group, coming from Hiva in two canoes, and founded the first settlement of Rapa Nui. Anakena was also a ceremonial center and appears in the Birdman cycle. In the 20th century the beach was excavated by Katherine Routledge and later by William Mulloy and Thor Heyerdahl.

At Ahu Nau Nau there are seven moai, some with pukao—the red stone headdresses; two are very weathered. Those that remained buried in the sand for a long time preserve carving details on their backs. Next to it, Ahu Ature Huki has a single moai standing on the slope. The beach area does not require a guide, but the Ahu Nau Nau sector follows the park rules.
