About Museo de Arte Moderno de Chiloé
The Museo de Arte Moderno de Chiloé, known by the acronym MAM, was founded in 1988 as an independent space for Chilean contemporary art, away from Santiago's circuits. Since then, artists from the country and abroad have donated works, and the collection grew to include painting, printmaking, sculpture and installations.
The museum occupies buildings on the high ground of the Parque Municipal de Castro, northwest of the center. The complex, designed in the 1970s by architect Isaac Ezquenazi, was abandoned when the MAM moved in. The renovation preserved the original wooden lines and received a restoration prize at an architecture biennial in Santiago.
The main exhibitions rotate each summer season and often engage with the territory: the sea, wood, myths and the island's rural work. The space also hosts artist residencies and workshops.
The surrounding park has woodland, picnic areas and the medialuna, the rodeo arena. From the top the view opens over Castro and the fjord, making the climb itself a worthwhile outing.
