The city
Castro is the capital of the province of Chiloé and one of the oldest cities in Chile, founded in 1567. In the Plaza de Armas stands the Igreja de San Francisco, a wooden church and UNESCO World Heritage site. The palafitos of Gamboa and Pedro Montt line the fjord, and the Museo de Arte Moderno de Chiloé occupies the higher part of the Parque Municipal. The town is a base for Dalcahue, Achao, Parque Nacional Chiloé and the Muelle de las Almas.
