About Beffroi de Tournai

The Beffroi de Tournai began to be built around 1188, after the French king Philip Augustus granted the town a charter of liberties including a communal bell. It is the oldest beffroi still standing in Belgium. In 1294 another floor and four small corner turrets were added, topped by a dragon.

The tower is 72 metres high. A fire damaged it in 1391, and the reconstruction lasted until 1400. The carillon was installed in 1535, and some rooms served as a prison until 1827. It is part of the group of beffrois of Belgium and France inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1999.

The climb has 257 steps. On the way you pass the large communal bell, the Bancloque, and the carillonneur's room. The second balcony, offering a 360-degree view, comes after 142 steps and shows the roofs, the Grand-Place and the cathedral's five towers up close. From the top you can make out the town's layout, with the Grand-Place at its feet and the Escalda cutting through the center.

Practical information

Cidade Turismo reviews its information regularly, but something may have changed. Check with the place before planning your trip.

How much time to set aside

About 45 minutes, including the climb and the view.

Best time

The tower is open Tuesday to Sunday, only in the afternoons. On a clear day the view reaches the countryside surrounding the town. Avoid the hour immediately before closing, as the climb takes time. Check the opening hours before you go.

How to get there

It sits between the Grand-Place and the cathedral, in the centre of Tournai, about a 10-minute walk from Gare de Tournai.

Tip

The staircase is narrow and steep, and there is no elevator. If you do not want to climb all 257 steps you can stop at the second balcony, after 142 steps, which already provides a full view. Wear sturdy footwear.

Frequently asked questions about Beffroi de Tournai

Is there an elevator?

No. The ascent is by stairs only: 257 steps to the top, or 142 to the second balcony, which already has 360-degree views.

What days is it open?

Open Tuesday to Sunday, in the afternoon. Closed on Mondays. Check before you go.

Why is it the oldest belfry in Belgium?

Because construction began around 1188, shortly after Tournai received the charter of liberties from the King of France. No other Belgian belfry from that era has survived intact to the present day.

What is the Bancloque?

It is the communal bell, which summoned the townspeople and announced events in the city. The visit passes beside it.
