About Basilique Saint-Hubert

The Basilica of Saint-Hubert was the church of the Benedictine Abbey of Saint Peter in the Ardennes, founded at the end of the 7th century. In the 9th century the abbey received the body of Saint Hubert, bishop of Liège and patron of hunters, and began to attract pilgrims. The church became a parish church in the 19th century and was raised to the status of basilica in 1927.

The present building was constructed in the 16th century in the late Gothic style, on the site of a Romanesque church of which the crypt remains. The Baroque façade, with two towers of about 60 metres, was added around 1700. Inside, the nave is tall and bright, and the choir stalls, dating from the 18th century, have carvings depicting scenes from the lives of Saint Hubert and Saint Benedict.

Beside the basilica stands the abbey palace, from the 18th century, the former residence of the abbots, which today hosts exhibitions. The two form the abbey quarter, classified as a major heritage site of Wallonia.

In the square in front of the basilica the feasts of Saint Hubert take place in early November, and the International Days of Hunting and Nature are held in September, with a blessing of the animals.
